One way to do this is to connect cheap GSM phone to your computer,
another is probably to use an ISP or service to pass email to phone.

I think there has been an article about the former kind of thing in Linux
Magazine (the UK version). You might want to check out Issue 30,
article "Red Alert" written by (german) Charly Kuehnast
