There is a bigger problem with file system related issues and logging.
that is, ponce the filesystem has hung, the system is no longer able to write to the logs, so there will be no more logging anyways.
Anything that goes through memory and cpu but needs no write to disk will work (i.e. routing) but anything that requires a write will not, squid, mail etc)
