Title
=====
MS04-028 Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) (Critical)
Proof of Concept exploit released.
Detail
======
Departmental and company security officers should be aware that a proof of concept
exploit has been published for the heap overflow in the handling of JPEG files in
Microsoft Windows XP (except Service Pack 2) and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, as
documented in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028.
See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-028.mspx.
Although this exploit does not allow remote code execution but rather causes denial
of service, an exploit which does allow remote code execution may become available
in due course.
Given that many applications (including Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer)
render JPEG images and that malicious content could be sent in documents and HTML
pages (including email), it is strongly recommended that affected Windows components
and applications are updated as soon as possible subject to testing that business
function is not affected.
