Microsoft - Security Bulletin Summary for November 2005
Detail
======
UNIRAS Comment:
This month Microsoft have released one update, which they have rated as critical.
The update patches three vulnerabilities relating to Windows Metafile and
Enhanced Metafile image files. UNIRAS has assessed the vulnerabilities as follows:
Graphics Rendering Engine Vulnerability - CAN-2005-2123
This vulnerability appears to affect all currently supported versions of Windows.
If exploited, it may allow remote code execution on an affected system. As
specially crafted images can be sent within an HTML e-mail, it is possible that
this vulnerability could be used by a e-mail borne virus. However, UNIRAS is
currently not aware of any proof-of-concept code or active exploits of this
vulnerability.
Windows Metafile Vulnerability - CAN-2005-2124
This vulnerability has a similar potential for use by an e-mail borne virus as
the above vulnerability. However, the vulnerability does not affect Windows XP
Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. It should also be noted
that UNIRAS is not aware of any proof-of-concept code or active exploits of this
vulnerability.
Enhanced Metafile Vulnerability - CAN-2005-0803
Microsoft reports that although proof-of-concept code has been publicly released
for this vulnerability, no active "in the wild" exploitation has been reported.
Exploitation of this vulnerability may cause a denial of service on an affected
system, most probably causing a program that opens a crafted file to stop
responding. It appears that the vulnerability does not contain the potential for
remote code execution or unauthorised remote access exploitation.
