Malicious Software Report concerning variants of Bagle and Netsky

During the past week, a number of Bagle and Netsky variants have appeared
in the wild. Analysis indicates that the activity relates to a so called 'virus
writer's war' between certain individuals or groups. The comment is substantiated
by phrases embedded within the code.

The level of threat associated with each variant is not easy to assess. However,
the protective security advice remains the same, ie:

1. Install the appropriate update from your antivirus software vendor as soon as
possible after it is released.
2. Block suspect or infected file attachments at the boundary gateways.
3. Advise users not to open suspect file attachments even if they appear to be
from friends or legitimate Email addresses. Note: Social engineering techniques
are being used to convince users to open such attachments.
4. Users should report suspiciuous Email to their local organisational security
authorities, who should then advise UNIRAS where it is appropriate.

UNIRAS will continue to monitor the situation as it develops and will provide
further advice as necessary.
